Latin lyrics

In this section I have selected the lyrics in Latin language and the invocations like Alleluia or Kyrie.

Agnus Dei (Josquin Despres) - 420-1, 5/3/2022

From the “Dodecachordon” collection from the Swiss musician and scholar Heinrich Glarean (Glareanus), an Agnus Dei in two voices transposed for guitar so that can be used in instrument solo moments. A little conterpoint masterpiece from the great Josquin

Agnus Dei (Ferrari) - mp3 - 70-1, 6/1/2013

This song (here you can find the original score and therecording of its first execution) has been composed at the end of a course of study on counterpoint, starting from the “Veni creator Spiritus” Gregorian melody. With this piece, a Sanctus and a Kyrie have been composed as well (you can find both here) and the three pieces have been executed on May 26th 2013 in the San Giuliano church in Bologna. It could be used as music after communion.

Alleluia (Ragno) - mp3 (chitarra) - Tab - 382-1, 2/13/2021

My friend Gianni sent me this nice tune for an Alleluia that can be sing with 1, 2 or 4 voices. I am glad to present here a simple transcription.

Alleluia (Soli) - mp3 (executed in G) - Tab - 24b-1, 11/23/2009, original in G

From the collection “Chiesa di Dio, popolo in festa” (EDB 1986) by rev. GianCarlo Soli published for the 1987 eucharistic congress in Bologna (see Agnello di Dio and Atto Penitenziale as well). The original is played in G but it can be executed in F. There is also a beautiful coda written for SATB choir (see below). This transcription was made for liturgical parish purpose. I play it regularly (usually without acclamation) and it seems to me that it works quite well.

Alleluia (Soli) - 24c-1, 1/22/2014

Alleluia - coda (Soli) - mp3 (only of the coda - executed in G) - 80-1, 1/20/2014, original in G

It is the same Alleluia as above in the complete version with 4-voices coda useful during solemnity. Better use should be to propose with a single voice, answer with the 4 voices, the strophe sung by a soloist and interludes of choir, and finally 4-voices again. At the end of the Gospel the 4-voices Alleluia is repeated and it can be followed by the coda. I had to rewrite so to have the same tonality during Alleluia and coda. Needless to say that the assembly joins the choir during the 4-voices Alleluia.

Alleluia - Psalm 118 (Soli) - mp3 - 250-1, 4/19/2018, original in G

This addiction was used during the Holy Mass with the Pope in Bologna on October 1st 2017, during the procession after the Gospel called of "enthronement of the Word". The verses have to be alternated with the Alleluia used as a refrain.

Alleluia (trad.) - mp3 - Tab - 42-1, 4/22/2011, original in D, harmonization Soli

A traditional Alleluia that the Cathedral choir often used some time ago when it was still called Calab Choir (the acronym stands for Center for the Animation of the Liturgy of the Archdioceses of Bologna). A simple and good-working Alleluia that goes well with guitar use. This transcription was made for liturgical use during some masses where people from different communities were coming as it is a well-known melody

Alleluia O filii et filiae (trad.) - 500-1, 1/1/2024, original in Bb

A simple transcription of this traditional Alleluia sometimes used in my diocese

Amen (spiritual) - mp3 - Tab - 106-1, 1/27/2015, original in F

Trancribing a spiritual has always the problem of finding a reliable score for starting. In this case I mixed the melody as written in an old spirituals and gospels collection and the Stefani’s harmonization as published in the 1985 Nella Casa del Padre book. Transcription written while preparing a prayer vigil.

Amen (Cerino) - mp3 - 229-1, 4/30/2017, original in B flat

It is the answer to the eucharistic prayer. I used the beautiful harmonization from GianCarlo Soli

Ave gratia plena (Ponce) - mp3 - 64-1, 7/1/2012, original in G

This transcription of the 3-voices Manuel Ponce’s choral, mexican author (1882-1948) is thought for instrumental use only. Infact the choosen tonality is far from the original and the position choosed on the fretboard doesn’t allow the use of the capo. I met this piece while preparing a wedding mass, I liked it and I tried to see how it worked on a guitar. I think it can be a good piece for meditative moments, i.e. after communion.

Ave Maria (Arcadelt) - mp3 - 117-1, 5/22/2015

Variant 1 - mp3 - 117a-1, 5/31/2015

Version 2 - mp3 (voice and guitar) - mp3 (guitar) - 117b-1, 6/27/2015, original in F

This very popular piece is simply a rehash of a secular song (Nous voyons que les hommes) from Jacques Arcadelt (1507-1568) made by Pierre-Louis Dietsch (1808-1865). Briefly, half a false history. Here you can find three transcriptions, the first two are unlikely playable on the original tonality (maybe the second one, I suggest to avoid to go further than D using the first one) and a third one that does not follow completely the melody so to permit to reach the F.

Ave Maria (Gounod) - 425-1, 4/10/2022

This is not the popular (and discussed) tune written on the prelude n.1 from the Bach's Well tempered clavier but a different tune that seemed to me pleasant and quite easily translatable for guitar apart from the unavoidable lowering of half a tone from A flat to G. Not so easy to play but not so difficult.

Ave Maria (Gregorian) - mp3 - Tab - 65-1, 7/7/2012

This is one of the most popular gregorian melody, the transcription starts from the Dante Stefani’s harmonization and it is due to an “epistolary” collaboration with Antonio. I haven’t tried it yet.

Ave Maria (Josquin Despres) - mp3 - 125-1, 10/3/2015

I prepared this work mainly for the pleasure of studying deeply this masterpiece from one of the greatest contrapuntists of the XVIth century. The tonality has been lowered of two tones and so it can be useful for an accompainment of a solo voice executing the soprano's melody or as accompainment music. It is not easy to play neither to read for the voices intertwinement.

Ave verum corpus (Mozart) - mp3 (voice and guitar) - Tab - 18-2, 5/10/2020, simplified version

Version 2 - mp3 - 66-2, 10/30/2012

A couple of alternatives for this famous piece (K618, composed in 1791) from Mozart (1756-1791), one for an easy accompaniment with a solo instrument (flute, oboe etc..), the other is more elaborated and tries to be faithful to the whole score. I tried the first one during some practice with the choir with good results.

Gaudeamus hodie (Sleeth) - mp3 - Tab - 27b-1, 8/29/2014, original in B flat

This transcription was prepared for a vigil never performed (for bad-weather reasons). There are three accompaniments for this 3-voices canon (it seemed to me the minimum as we were three players).

Gaudete (from Piae Cantiones) - mp3Tab - 241-1, 12/26/2017, original in C

Taken from the collection Piae Cantiones ecclesiasticae et scholasticae veterum episcoporum, containing medieval songs from north Europe, published in 1582 by finnish Jaakko Suomalainen (Jacobus Finno), headmaster of the Cathedral School at Turku, this simple but well-done choral seem to be really effective. Thanks to Michele that called me to sing it in a beautiful Christmas celebration. Note: this piece has been recorded by Angelo Branduardi in his Futuro Antico album.

Haec dies (Bach) - mp3 - 114-1, 5/4/2015, original in B flat

I had already tried to transcribe this beautiful choral from Cantata n.15. Now I have made some simplifications and I wrote it for two guitars, I moved it one and a half tone below (and it’s not thought for using a fretboard) and I used an organ score as reference instead of the complete one. I hope the resulting item is quite acceptable, I will try to do better in the future. Note: to better clarify voices textures I wrote soprano and tenor voices.

Iesu dulcis memoria (gregorian) - mp3 - 154-1, 3/11/2016

Gregorian chant which lyrics might have been written by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. This is another sample of the cooperation with my friend Orlando

Jube Domine silentium (sec. XIII) - mp3 - 153-1, 2/28/2016

Version 1 - 153-2, 28/2/2016

A couple of suggestions for his ancient chant made with an archaic contrapuntal 2 voices polyphony. The first one is a simple transposition from the score , in the second one I added a third line so that it will be possible to use with a three-voices choir.

Kyrie (Gregorian) - 68-1, 4/7/2013, original in D moll (rough definition just to sign a sort of reference tonality used for the harmonization), harmonization Stefani

Version 1 - mp3 - 79-1, 1/18/2014, original in D moll (see above), harmonization Pietra

For a practical accompaniment of this easy but really efficacious Gregorian Kyrie, avoiding any discussion on the opportunity of doing this. Transcription made for liturgical use but seldom used as I prefer playing with shelled chords.

Kyrie (Pietra) - 69-1, 5/18/2013

This piece (of which here I report the complete score and a recording of the first execution) has been composed at the end of a course on the counterpoint, starting from the “Veni creator Spiritus” Gregorian melody. Togheter with it, a Sanctus and an Agnus Dei have been composed too (trancribed and here available). They all have been executed on May 26th 2013 at Bologna in the San Giuliano church.

Kyrie - mp3 (Tasini) - 294-1, 4/28/2019

Into a good proposal from Bologna's dioceses, expecially due to Rev. Francesco Vecchi's commitment, some pieces have been choosen to be presented to parrish choirs both for local usage and for possible diocesan use. For ordinary, the "Mass for assembly" from Francesco Tasini have been choosen, from which, this Kyrie has been taken (see also Gloria)

Kyrie I (Taizé) - mp3 - Tab- 31b-1, 3/16/2010, it contains 3 possible accompaniments

Three easy transcriptions for this well-known Taizé invocation, made while preparing a Vigil for Palm Sunday. I heard a good guitar player using it years later..

Kyrie 6 (Berthier) - mp3 - Tab- 36-1, 11/30/2010, it contains 2 possible accompaniments

Transcription written for a Taizé prayer vigil but never performed.

Magnificat (Berthier) - mp3 - 32a-1, 3/19/2010

Variant 1 - mp3 - 32b-1, 3/16/2010

Variant 2 - mp3 - 32c-1, 3/16/2010

Three possible accompaniments for this traditional Taizé canon. Transcriptions made while preparing a participation to the Diocesan Palm Sunday vigil. I have used often the first one.

Nada te turbe (Berthier) - mp3 - 104-1, 1/13/2015

An “ostinato” from the Bologna Diocesan Youth Choir repertory transcribed in a linear way while preparing a Lent vigil (see Il Signore è la mia forza).

Nitida stella (Bozan) - mp3 - 148-1, 2/3/2016, harmoniztion Gemmani

A simple choral from a Czech musician lived between the XVII and the XVIII century. This piece was suggested to me from my friend Orlando.

O filii et filiae (gregoriano) - mp3 - 146-1, 1/30/2016

I wrote the transcription of this late gregorian piece for the Easter time, while going on with a new remote cooperation with Orlando (see Evenu shalom). As I could not find a satisfactory harmonization, I tried to write by myself, writing a simple and kinear one. I hope you will not dislike.

O quam amabilis (anonymous) - mp3 - 123-1, 8/10/2015

A simple XVII century piece for three voices that fits well with a guitar accompainment.

O sacrum convivium (Molfino) - mp3 - 237-1, 10/17/2017

A choral from a 20th century musician whose strengths are the simplicity and linearity. It was performed on October 1st 2017 during the Holy mass with Pope Francesco in Bologna

Omni die dic Mariae (gregorian) - mp3 - 155-1, 3/18/2016, original in F, harmonization Vianini

A beautiful gregorian sequence that my friend Orlando has propsed to me. I trancribed it using a good harmonization from Giovanni Vanini, director of the Schola Gregoriana Mediolanensis choir

Pange lingua (gregorian) - 428-1, 5/20/2022, original in C

Transcription from gregorian of this popular hymn based on the harmonization of Dante Stefani about which I have some doubts (maybe due to my poor comprehension) for the harmonization of the final Amen

Panis angelicus (Franck) - mp3 - 94-1, 9/28/2014, original in F

Variant 1 - mp3 - 26a-2, 11/1/2014

Variant 2 - mp3 - 26b-3, 5/10/2020, original in F

Popular Cesar Franck’s piece composed at the end of the XIX century on the St. Thomas’s hymn "Sacris solemniis". Notissimo brano di Cesar Franck composto a fine ottocento su un testo preso dall'inno "Sacris solemniis" di San Tommaso d'Aquino. This version is thought for a solo tenor, I used it in a wedding some times ago. Here it is proposed a complete transcription, not easy but not too difficult, and two simplified versions (in two tonality) in which it is not transcribed the introduction and some instrumental passages.

Puer natus in Bethlehem (Bach) - mp3 - 113-1, 4/18/2015, original in G moll

Having had the score of this choral in my hands as I had to sing it, following a friend request, as a tenor in a little concert, I realized that the transcription for the guitar was very comfortable. I hope that the result will not misinterpret the choral clearness.

Salve Regina (Gregorian) -  mp3 (voice and guitar) - mp3 (guitar) - 396-1, 9/11/2021

Trancription prepared following a request from my friend Luigi who has been really kind so that I decidet to try. I used the harmonization from Antonio Fant.

Sanctus (Ragno) - 71-1, 6/8/2013

This piece (of which here I report the complete score and arecording of the first execution) has been composed at the end of a course on the counterpoint, starting from the “Veni creator Spiritus” Gregorian melody. Togheter with it, a Kyrie and an Agnus Dei have been composed too (trancribed and here available). They all have been executed on May 26th 2013 at Bologna in the San Giuliano church.

Stabat Mater (Gregorian) - mp3 (guitar) - 397-1, 9/11/2021

Second request from my friend dell'amico Luigi (see Salve Regina). For this work, I've used the Luciano Migliavacca's harmonization.

Stabat Mater (Kodaly) - mp3 - 115-1, 5/15/2015

Variant 1 - mp3 - 115b-1, 5/15/2015, original in B moll

From Jacopone da Todi’s text, Kodaly extracted this deep choral that I met when I subscribed the request of a friend of mine that was looking for tenors. The first version is lowered of one tonality from the original but it is hard to play with a fretboard. The second version, lowered to E moll, although not easy to play, is available for a VII position fretboard so to bring it back to the original tonality.

Surge qui dormis (Willcock, Costa) - mp3 - 121-1, 7/25/2015

A simple but evocative piece from the Bologna Diocesan Youth Choir repertory.

Tota pulchra (gregoriano) - mp3 - 150-1, 2/18/2016, originale in Re minore

The ascribed tonality is rough (let's say that the used transcription was in this tonality), this piece is part of that set that my friend Orlando has suggested to me. I lost the references of this beautiful transcription, I beg pardon and I will try to repair.

Victimae Paschali (Gregoriano) - 399-1, 9/21/2021

Third request from my friend dell'amico Luigi (see Salve Regina and Stabat Mater). For this work, I've used the Luciano Migliavacca's harmonization.

Veni creator Spiritus (Gregorian) - mp3 - 89-1, 6/6/2014, harmonization Stefani, original in C (as it is written on the staff)

As I have already written for Kyrie, I will not discuss here the opportunity of making an accompaniment for a Gregorian melody. Here you can find one maybe useful for pratical purposes.
